Capacity for Change

This week, while chatting with a friend, I was reminded of something about change.

We often assume people have the capacity for the change we're asking them to make.

But change doesn't happen in isolation.

Someone might be navigating:

  • A sick parent
  • Financial pressure
  • Relationship challenges
  • Neurodivergent burnout
  • Health issues
  • A major life transition

The change initiative only sees one part of their world.

The person is carrying all of it.

Sometimes what looks like resistance is actually a capacity problem.

Before asking:

"Why aren't they engaging?"

Try asking:

"What else is going on for them right now?"
